Relentless Energy: Short Stories "Dark Side Of The Lens"

Relentless Energy presents Short Stories, a challenge to recognised core sports and music filmmakers around the world to explore, reveal and define 'No Half Measures' through the medium of film.
The brief has been simple; re-imagine Relentless Energy's No Half Measures motto via the medium of film - express the uncompromising attitude of those leading progression in their sport's arena into passionate and stunning short films.

For 2010, four film makers were given access to Relentless Energy athletes, who were to be used as the subject of their film.  How they used these athletes to embody the project's slogan was entirely up to the competing film maker.

The four films will be judged by a selection of industry heavy weights deciding the eventual winner at the end of the year.

The first Short Stories film comes to us from underwater photographer and surfer Mickey Smith who sets out to explore his world as a true 'waterman', both as an athlete and artist.  The film is called "The Dark Side of the Lens".

Here's what Mickey had to say about his film...
"Originally I planned for the film to be more anonymous, rather than biographical.  An all encompassing piece, to represent the photographers keeping the surfing machine afloat.  An insight into what it takes to grind out a living as a water-based photographer in the surfing industry: a short experimental glimpse at a life lived in the shadow of obsessive photographic pursuits."

"It also gave me the chance to ask myself a few questions, like, if you're always observing and documenting what you see and experience, are you ever truly present?  Questions like that where I could step back think and see what the answers were."

Shot on Super 16mm film and the Canon 5D Mk II's amazing HD Smith shot on the Atlantic coastline of West Ireland and North Cornwall to log 38 hours worth of footage.  The end result is embedded below and definitely worth 5 minutes of your time.  For more on the whole competition head to relentlessenergy.com.
