Maison Martin Margiela ‘20’ The Exhibition

This summer, from Thursday 3rd June and Saturday 5th September, Somerset House is hosting Maison Martin Margiela ’20’ The Exhibition; a major exhibition celebrating 20 years of one of contemporary fashion’s most influential and enigmatic designers.

Maison Martin Margiela ’20’ The Exhibition will explore the designer’s artistic and conceptual approach to fashion.

Martin Margiela formerly worked as design assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier before showing his first collection under his own label in 1988.  Employing a ‘deconstructivist’ approach - monochromatic palette, outsized garments, non-traditional fabrics, the use of recycled materials and exposing the construction of his clothes - Margiela displayed a radically new visual language.

The exhibition has been conceived in close collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela and curated by the Mode Museum, Antwerp, this exciting show makes its London debut where it will be specially reconfigured for the Embankment Galleries. It promises to be a multi-layered exhibition capturing Margiela’s unique aesthetic and vision spanning the past 20 years, incorporating installations, photography, video and film, and providing an opportunity to learn more about the brand and its philosophy. Not to be missed!
